The Rise of Wellbeing
The concept of wellbeing is as old as humanity itself. While the term “wellbeing” is relatively modern, the pursuit of a fulfilling and balanced life has been a cornerstone of human existence for thousands of years.
Practices like Ayurveda from India that includes yoga, and Confucianism from China emphasised holistic health, including physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.
The concept of wellbeing gained prominence in the late 20th century with a growing awareness of mental health and quality of life. While the term “wellbeing” is fairly new, the underlying desire for a fulfilling life is not.
One way of improving potentially improving your wellbeing is by considering the concept of Ikigai. It’s a Japanese concept that translates to “a reason for being.” It’s about finding your purpose in life, something that gives you a sense of meaning and fulfilment. Ikigai is often represented as the intersection of the following four key elements:
What you love: Your passions, hobbies, and interests.
What you are good at: Your talents and skills.
What the world needs: How your skills can contribute to society.
What you can be paid for: How you can make a living from your passions and skills.
Discovering your ikigai is a personal journey. It involves self-reflection, exploration, and experimentation. So why not take some time to reflect on your passions, values, and strengths. Try new things and discover hidden talents and think about how you identify how you can make a positive impact on the world.
