Walking in the South Downs National Park

The South Downs National Park, officially established in 2010, is the UK’s newest National Park. Spanning approximately 1,627 square kilometres. The park stretches for 140 kilometres running west to east from the outskirts of Winchester in Hampshire to the chalk cliffs at Eastbourne in East Sussex, encompassing a vast area across three counties.

This terrain is significant for its rare chalk grassland habitat, a biologically rich environment supporting unique species like the vibrant Adonis blue butterfly and many wild orchids. To the north, the park also protects significant parts of the Western Weald, which presents a contrasting landscape of dense, ancient woodland, sandstone hills, and river valleys.

It’s a haven for hikers, containing the most extensive network of public access routes among all UK National Parks, totalling over 3,300km of footpaths and bridleways. Walking here is renowned for its sense of space, offering panoramic views that often include the glittering English Channel to the south and the patchwork fields of the Weald to the north.

The backbone of the park’s walking provision is the South Downs Way, a celebrated National Trail. This continuous trail covers 160 kilometres (100 miles) and runs entirely within the park boundary, tracing the ancient of the chalk hills from west to east. Completing the full route typically requires 7 to 9 days of walking. The park is also ideal for shorter, accessible walks that still capture the essence of the landscape. Walkers can seek shade and variety in the forested areas, such as the impressive collection of ancient yew trees at Kingley Vale, or the managed woodlands of Friston Forest.

It has been recognised as an International Dark Sky Reserve since 2016, offering exceptional stargazing opportunities.

The South Downs National Park guarantees a rewarding walking experience, blending breathtaking natural beauty with thousands of years of human history.
