The difference between walking and hiking.

What’s the difference between walking and hiking?

While both involve putting one foot in front of the other, there are some key distinctions between these two outdoor activities.

The Walk

A walk is typically a leisurely stroll on a paved or well-maintained path. It’s often shorter in distance and requires minimal planning or equipment. Think of a stroll through the park, a lap around the village or a casual trip to the shops. Walks are great for socialising, getting some fresh air, or simply clearing your head.

The Hike

A hike, on the other hand, is generally more challenging. It involves venturing off the beaten path, often into rugged terrain. Hikes tend to be longer, with varying elevations, and may require specific gear like hiking boots, a backpack, and possibly even a map and compass. The goal of a hike is often to explore nature, challenge yourself physically, and immerse yourself in the outdoors.

When Does Walking become Hiking?

The transition from a walk to a hike isn’t always clear-cut. It can depend on several factors:

Terrain: If you’re leaving the pavement and venturing onto dirt trails, rocky paths, or steep inclines, you’re probably hiking.

Distance: Longer distances typically indicate a hike rather than a walk.

Equipment: If you need hiking boots, a backpack, or other specialised gear, it’s likely a hike.

Physical exertion: If you’re breaking a sweat and feeling your heart rate increase, you’re probably hiking.

Ultimately, whether you call it a hike or a walk depends on your personal preference.

At Wellbeing Walks we will design the walk or hike based on your team’s needs. We offer inclusive days out that and can be designed for all. There is no pressure for anyone to go out of their comfort zone and safety comes first. We send out a questionnaire beforehand so we know what you are comfortable with and what experience you have of walking or hiking so you have a great day.

Our corporate wellness events are fantastic opportunities to connect with nature, get some exercise, and enjoy the fresh air. So, lace up your shoes, grab your water bottle, and let’s hit the trail – or the pavement!
